INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY. 21ST FEBRUARY.

 In 1948, Urdu was declared the national language in present-day Bangladesh and then East Pakistan. The Bengali-speaking people there were outraged by this decision. Many politicians and common people gathered with the students of Dhaka University in a protest meeting. Four students of Dhaka University --- Salam, Barkat, Rafiq, and Jabbar were killed when police opened fire to quell the protest. The day was February 21, 1952.

      This tragic incident had a profound effect on the national life of then East Pakistan. As a result of intense protests and language movement, the government was forced to recognize Bengali as the official language in 1956. Kabir Sumon wrote the song titled 'Ekushey February' ----

                          The language for which salam-Barkat and friends gave blood

                          Fifty-two years of fighting, I was born

                          That language is my song, your drink, my promise;

                          I'm so excited about the language ...

                          Let the West be enlightened in that inauguration of the East

                          Ekushey February is my light, my eyes.

       The West has been enlightened, apparently. On 16 November 1999, UNESCO declared 21st February as International Mother Language Day, and every year since 2000, the day has been celebrated around the world as Mother Language Day. Rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, the national poet of Bangladesh, is fast asleep on the premises of the traditional Dhaka University.

        According to a survey conducted by a website called 'Visual Capitalist' in 2020, Bangla is at number 7 in the list of the most spoken languages ​​in the world. The Bengalis of West Bengal celebrate this day every year. This wonderful sculpture bears that testimony. This language-martyr memorial has been erected on Jawaharlal Nehru Road in Kolkata under the supervision of renowned artist Yogen Chowdhury.
